Description
A wonderfully bold genuine Madras check, handwoven in small villages outside Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India.
Jewel combines large blocks of rich teal, raspberry pink, mustard, orange, wine and green. Where the coloured warp and weft threads cross, new shades appear, giving the fabric the depth and slightly changeable colour that makes woven Madras so distinctive.
This is genuine Madras Kattam fabric – kattam referring to the characteristic checked or grid pattern. Rather than the design being printed onto the surface, the checks are created as the cloth itself is woven using different coloured threads.
The handwoven construction gives the fabric a lovely natural texture and character. Look closely and you may see small variations in the weave, yarn or colour. These aren’t faults, but part of what makes handmade cloth quite different from a perfectly uniform, machine-produced check.
With its generous 9.5 × 9.5 cm check and mix of jewel-like colours, this fabric makes a fabulous statement dress, skirt, loose shirt, top or pair of relaxed trousers. You can carefully pattern-match the large checks or play with their scale by turning pieces on the cross-grain for pockets, yokes or other details.
Handwoven in India and sourced by bhumi & pari with its handmade origin verified.
