Description
Market is perhaps the most traditional-looking of this colourful little group – a fabulous handwoven Madras Kattam cotton combining sunny yellow, turquoise, black, burgundy, orange, green and earthy olive tones.
The smaller checks create a wonderfully busy grid of colour, while the interaction between the warp and weft threads produces additional shades where the colours cross. It’s one of those fabrics that becomes more interesting the closer you look.
Handwoven in small villages outside Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, this is genuine Madras cloth. Unlike a printed check, its pattern is formed by coloured threads during the weaving process, so the check is part of the fabric rather than something applied to its surface.
The handmade process gives the cloth its characteristic texture and slight irregularity. You may notice small variations in the weave, yarn or colour from place to place. We consider these part of the fabric’s story and character rather than imperfections.
The combination of black and deeper earthy shades gives this one a slightly more grounded feel while the turquoise and yellow keep it wonderfully bright. It would make a terrific dress, skirt, shirt, loose top or relaxed trousers, and the smaller check lends itself beautifully to bags, patchwork and other smaller sewing projects too.

We sell our fabrics in 50cm increments. You will need to choose the number of increments you want to meet the whole entire length you need. For example, if you want 1 metres of fabric select 2, if you need 2 metres of fabric select 4.
As this fabric is hand printed there will be some pattern and colour variations across the length of the fabric. You are really buying a one of a kind item!
Every effort has been made to accurately portray the colours used in this fabric, however individual monitor settings and other factors may cause discrepancies.
We recommend the you use the following care instructions.
- It is recommended to wash the fabric before use, particularly dark colours and indigo. We recommend washing your fabric before use. As this is a handwoven cotton, some shrinkage may occur with the first wash.
- Gentle cold machine wash

- Do not dry clean
