Carnival is a joyful genuine Madras Kattam cotton filled with turquoise, emerald green, cobalt blue, hot pink, purple, yellow and orange. The smaller-scale check creates a lively patchwork of colour, with the crossing threads producing even more shades within the weave.
This fabric is handwoven in small villages outside Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, using coloured warp and weft threads to create the check as the cloth is woven. The design isn’t printed onto the fabric – it is an integral part of its construction.
That traditional woven structure is one of the things that makes genuine Madras cloth so interesting. Look closely and you’ll see texture and small irregularities that you simply don’t get from a mass-produced printed check.
Carnival would be brilliant made into a relaxed dress, gathered skirt, shirt, top or easy summer trousers. The smaller check also makes it particularly versatile for accessories, patchwork, bags, children’s clothing and colourful home sewing.
And despite the number of colours, it’s surprisingly easy to pair – pick almost any colour from the check for your buttons, trims or coordinating fabric.

We sell our fabrics in 50cm increments. You will need to choose the number of increments you want to meet the whole entire length you need. For example, if you want 1 metres of fabric select 2, if you need 2 metres of fabric select 4.
As this fabric is hand printed there will be some pattern and colour variations across the length of the fabric. You are really buying a one of a kind item!
Every effort has been made to accurately portray the colours used in this fabric, however individual monitor settings and other factors may cause discrepancies.
We recommend the you use the following care instructions.
* It is recommended to wash the fabric before use, particularly dark colours and indigo. We recommend washing your fabric before use. As this is a handwoven cotton, some shrinkage may occur with the first wash.
* Gentle cold machine wash
* Do not tumble dry
* Do not bleach
* Warm iron
* Do not dry clean
